The Anointing at Bethany

John 12:1-8
1. Jesus, therefore, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2. So they made Him a supper there, and Martha was serving; but Lazarus was one of the people eating with Jesus. 3. Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4. But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who was intending to betray Him, said, 5. “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to poor people?” 6. Now he said this, not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box, he used to pilfer what was put into it. 7. Therefore Jesus said, “Let her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of My burial. 8. For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.”

The Anointing at Bethany corresponds with the Guru Chakra of the Indian tradition. The Guru chakra is part of the seventh center together with the Sahasrara chakra at the crown of the head. Inside the triangle of the Guru chakra are the two feet of the guru, these two feet are like lotus flowers and from these flowers the fragrant nectar of immortality flows.

The symbol of the perfume

John 12:3 - Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

The perfume used by Mary represents the nectar of immortality:

“The mind in the Guru Chakra contemplates the two lotuses which are the feet of the Guru, and of which the ruby colored nectar (of immortality) of the moon flows”. - Paduka Panchaka
But unless you know Him, Your fleshly desires rid, you cannot reach His Feet that are with honeyed flowers bedecked. - Tirumantiram 1848

Both the Anointing of the feet of Jesus and the raising of Lazarus take place at Bethany. Both events have in common the theme of immortality: a) the raising of Lazarus b) the Nard perfume nectar, symbol of immortality. Nard is made out of a flower growing in the Himalayas of India, Nepal and China. Its color is amber/saffron.

Mary wipe the feet of Jesus with her hair

John 12:3 - Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

Shakti, the consort of Lord Shiva is said to have her hair bedecked with fragrance from the two lotus flowers of the two feet of the Lord.

The Lady of fragrant flower bedecked tresses, In the Lord, in union, stands. - Tirumantiram 1063
Those who went by the Secret Way of Yoga, reached Sakti of dark fragrant tresses - Tirumantiram 2692

The symbol of the feet

John 12:3 - Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus.

Inside the triangle of the Guru chakra are the two feet of the guru, these two feet are like lotus flowers and from these flowers the fragrant nectar of immortality flows. In the Indian tradition, The Guru’s feet are the two elements in the mantra So’Ham which means “I am That”. Soham is associated with the movement of the breath. So stands for the exhalation, Ham stands for the inhalation. The process of breath control makes possible the flow of the nectar of immortality.

Mukti (liberation) indeed for those that anoint the feet of holy men. - Tirumantiram 1829
Knowledge of Science of Breath Leads to Immortality - Tirumantiram 571
From the feet of the Guru, the saffron-liked red-colored nectar of immortality flows. - Paduka Pancaka

Martha, Mary and Lazarus

Martha, Mary and Lazarus are 3 brother/sisters from the village of Bethany close to Jerusalem in Judea (John 11:1 - 11:2 - 11:5). They are associated with the upper triangle located in the Guru chakra called a- ka- tha triangle. Martha, Mary and Lazarus are associated with the three stages of the path of enlightenment: charya, kriya and yoga.

- Martha represents charya: virtue and selfless service, the path of the servitor.
John 12:2 - So they made Him a supper there, and Martha was serving.
- Mary represents kriya: devotion, the devotee is close to the Lord.
John 12:3 - Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair.
- Lazarus represents yoga: the path of the Lord's friend, leading to the attainment of the state of
  Jivan Mukti (liberation while living)
.
John 11:11 - He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep.
John 11:44 - The man who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

The Indian tradition mentions 2 triangles in the body: one located in the Muladhara chakra and one located in the Guru chakra/Sahasrara chakra. In the Gospel a group of 3 persons originating from the same city is mentioned twice:

1. Martha, Mary and Lazarus are from the village of Bethany. They are associated with the three stages of the path of enlightenment: charya, kriya and yoga of the upper triangle located in the Guru chakra.
2. Andrew, Philip and Simon are from the village of Bethsaida in Galilee. (John 1:40 - 1:44 - 6:8 - 12:21) They are associated with the 3 main nadis (Ida, Pingala and Sushumna respectively) of the lower triangle located in the Muladhara chakra.

The 300 denarii worth of perfume

John 12:5-6 - Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to poor people? Now he said this, not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box, he used to pilfer what was put into it.

The name Bethany means "house of the poor". The money in the Indian tradition is associated with the action of the 5 senses in the body. The 5 senses need to be controlled for the nectar of immortality to flow and liberation to occur.

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 5:14:2 - In the forest of material existence, the uncontrolled senses are like plunderers. The uncontrolled senses plunder the money through sense gratification. The senses are plunderers because they make one spend his money unnecessarily for seeing, smelling, tasting, touching, hearing, desiring and willing. In this way the conditioned soul is obliged to gratify his senses, and thus all his money is spent. This money is actually acquired for the execution of religious principles (obtaining liberation and letting the nectar of immortality flow), but it is taken away by the plundering senses.

The only other occurrence of a value in denarii in the Gospel is at the Feeding of the 5000 (200 denarii of bread). The multiplication of the bread is associated with the Anointing at Bethany through the 200 denarii worth of bread and the 300 denarii worth of perfume. The bread is the bindu (Lord's body - the flesh of Christ) that needs to merge into the body so that the nectar (the Nard perfume, Ambrosia) can well and grant immortality.

From the bread to the nectar:
The fiery Bindu above is Lord's Body (the bread) - Tirumantiram 1951
Absorb Bindu in Body and Become Immortal. - Tirumantiram 1966
When Bindu Merges Ambrosia Wells. - Tirumantiram 1971
From the feet of the Guru, the nectar (Ambrosia) of immortality flows. - Paduka Pancaka
John 6:51 - "I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh."
